We are three ladies from Zwelihle: Christabelle Kepkar, Nobahle Stemela and Neliswa Mteto. We are the bread winners in our families and decided to work together and start buying and selling chickens to supplement our salaries as domestic workers.
Nobahle Stemele (43): I am a domestic worker and a single mother of two and I am also responsible for my mother and siblings back home in Alice.
Neliswa Mteto (46): I work as a domestic worker, am a widowed mother of two young grandchildren. I come from Lady Frere.
Christabelle Kepkar (46): I am married and a mother of three. My husband is currently unemployed, and I also come from Lady Frere.
Our business does very well in Zwelihle: we sell 30 – 35 chickens every second week. The chickens come from the main farm in Phillipi, Cape Town and we resell them in Zwelihle. Our business suffered during and after the protests that happened in July; as a result we have been struggling to get back on our feet. We are applying for a loan so that we can buy new stock and purchase a deep freeze to enable us to store additional stock.
Total loan applied for R6,000
This project has been set up to succeed through a careful vetting process together with ongoing mentorship and management. Repayment of your loan will only take place at the end of the loan period (usually 12 months) and not monthly. However, as we cannot give any guarantees, in the unlikely event that the project does fail you will not receive the full repayment of your loan but a pro rata percentage depending upon what portion of the loan has been recovered from the business owner.
